I had a premonition. All my peeps are going to see success and prosperity in the upcoming year, and it made me very happy.

So, party hard today until the break of 2008, then 'Welcome to the Good Life"!

As personal goals, I have made the following resolutions for 2008. Many of these resolutions can be done in tandem, so feel free to join in!

Prosperity:
Bar Hoppin - Get my Patent Bar finished, and 'D.C.' bar certified by March (April at latest).

Come up on Some Scrill - I want to make 20K more next year than this one. Lets start a business. e-mail with your business plans.

Happiness:
Rock Out - Dust the dirt off my shoulders as well as the dust off my new guitar.

Pound the Hole - My Calloway Clubs have an itch to be played with. That's golf for you dirty minded peeps.

Health:

The Century Club (Rather 1.2 millennium club) - Run 5 miles a day, average of 5 days a week

(5 miles/day x 5 days/week x 4 weeks/month = 100 miles per month; 1.2 k miles per year)

Transform 20 - I want to keep most of my body weight, so I want to only lose 10 pounds, and transform at least another 10 pounds into muscle mass.

Isolated 8:00 - My eating schedule is backed up so that I typically eat dinner after 10:00 or 11:00 at night. Unless in a social occasion, try to eat my last meal before 8:00.

The Dry Spell - To not drink alcohol except for on social occasions... So lets celebrate next year.

Representing the 'yay' (bay area for those ebonically challenged):

Bring back the following phrases:

ill/illin -
'ILL' : Adjective meaning 'wild' or 'crazy'. Not always derogatory, but used when something may be so outrageous so as to be unruly.'ILLIN': Adjective or Verb. Lunatic behaviour. See above.
"The guy was drunk - he was Illin'""With those green and yellow clothes you look real ill."

knockin boots -

Don't want to publish a definition here. Ask your ill'st friend.

taxi -

Phrase to shout out when someone makes an embarrassing party-foul (ex. when a person breaks a glass at a bar). Derives from the need to call a taxi to get the embarrassment out of sight.

Success to Law School, Part 1 Rule Outlining, Focus Torts

Note: This message, and hence blog is dedicated to the person who inspired me to take on this project, PJ #1. This first message was taken from an e-mail message to her.

I could not explain how I 'outlined' in LS, and was going to go back and try to find anything LS related, but it is all gone...... I was going to try to create a short Essay-prep outline for you then I found LawNerds. Alright, I know it seems stupid, and the name is as dorky as it sounds.

However, this site follows the same path that I followed in studying for LS: Short, concise rule statements following an organized outline of the issues presented. For an example, check this out: http://www.lawnerds.com/testyourself/torts_rules.html

I highly recommend creating a Rule Outline for your classes similar to the one presented there. The beauty about studying this way is once you create your short outline, you are prepared to take the test. It perfectly mirrors IRAC, which will get you the A.

Here is an example test answer I quickly prepared. If the rules are wrong, you would update them from your rule outline:

Intentional Torts [ISSUE]
A tort is intentional if it is a volitional act, with the intent to cause (or done with knowledge that there is a substantial certainty to cause) the desired result. [RULE FROM RULE OUTLINE YOU WILL PREPARE]
In our case, the defendant's actions of (ACT) was done as a result of his free will and being, and his intent to cause the (RESULTING ACTION) can be shown as he (CAUSING ACTION). [ANALYSIS]
Therefore, the defendant's actions can be considered intentional. [CONCLUSION]

Battery [ISSUE]
A battery is a harmful or offensive contact to a person, or something closely related to that person. [RULE]

Harmful or Offensive [ISSUE]
Courts have determined that any unwanted touching is considered harmful or offensive. [RULE(Build this rule statement from your casebook)]
In our case, the defendant's actions can be considered harmful or offensive because defendant's act of (ACT) was a touching, and a resonable person would consider this act harmful or offensive, or alternatively unwanted. [ANALYSIS, CONCLUSION]

Contact to a Person [ISSUE; RULE implied, expressed above]
Here defendant contacted the plaintiff when he (ACT). [ANALYSIS, CONCLUSION]

In summary, since the defendant made a harmful or offensive contact to the plaintiff, he could be found guilty of committing a battery.[SUMMARY CONCLUSION]

... Repeat for the rest of the issues.

Does this make any sense? Use only if it makes things easier for you, but it made my torts test a breeze.

Remember that intentional torts tests are made to be 'race horse' exams because the format they take is pretty straight-forward... Therefore, the only way to differentiate between the exams is by presenting too many issues for the time allotted.
Remember to allocate your time wisely.

Now that classes have started. My time has been significantly limited (with about 100 pages of reading a day).

However, these are my learned educators:

International Criminal Law
David Tolbert "the compassionate prosecutor": While not serving as Deputy Prosecutor for the Yugoslavian Ad Hoc Tribunal to prosecute Milosovich and his henchman, Tolbert prosecutes us as to whether we have done our reading.

Islamic Jurisprudence
Sherman "Action" Jackson: Prudential scholar and learned author in jurisprudence, Professor Jackson makes the unbearable reading understandable by his learned and lively presence and his enthralling lectures (just watch out for chalk).

International Gas and Oil Law
Dobie Langenkamp: This miner of "Oklahoma Sweet" professes that oil to him is like crushed fruit. When not informing you of his 'daddies' history with Gulf Oil, Professor Langenkamp is too humble to tell that he has served on numerous oil boards including high positions in the US Department of Energy or of his numerous scholarly lectures and speeches. This down home boy is a wealth of knowledge that is ready to be drilled, pumped and exhausted.

In Cairo!

The Jet lag has passed, and I am finally starting to get acclimated. The way over was an experience on Aeroflot airlines. The Russian airlines hosted the worst plane service, coupled with uncomfortable seats and an interesting Russian lady behind me who enjoyed kicking the seat in front of her for the duration of the flight. However, the flight between Moscow and Cairo was a nice surprise in that the seats were comfortable, the flight was not overcrowded, and I encountered a fellow Whitttier Law Student, Jacob Crisp. Sitting next to me on the flight, I soon realized that he too was going on the summer abroad program, and we started a conversation. Soon we decided that we would be roommates, and that eased one of my potential problems.

A few hours later we got into Cairo. Customs in Cairo was surprisingly easy because AUC (American University in Cairo) had a representative waiting for us to assist us and a van to take us to Zalamek.

Zalamek is the Nile Island where the Dorm/Hostel is located. We soon got in and realized that it was already past 3:00 A.M. We got into our room and got what few winks we could muster given that we had class the next day at 9:00 (which really turned out to be 8:00). We got up at 6:00, got breakfast and returned to the dorm to find out that we were late and needed to take a Taxi to the University.

Taxi rides in Cairo make New York Taxi's seem like carriage rides through Central Park. Navigating through streets full of bikes, pedestrians, and parked cars, we finally made it.

We met our professors, had lectures on the Arabic Language, was assigned our cell phones, and other orientation procedures for the next 7 hours. Drained, and exhausted, when we were planning on returning to our dorms, we were surprised to find out that we would be touring the overlooks of the Nile valley. Two more hours later, we finally arrived home, and I had a chance to go mi-mi's. 11 hours of sleep later I feel revived, and am ready for a new day.
